A New Awakening: Women Conquering the Diving Space

The UAE has always been at the forefront when it comes to making a difference for women. From offering women key positions in the management to introducing revolutionary initiatives, the country is home to some big achievements. In the past few years, female trailblazers have left their mark in every sector. In fact, some of the most remarkable women in the nation are conquering its waters, whether through deep sea diving, competing in water sports, or serving as captains at major seaports.
‘Women in Diving’ served as an important topic of discussion at the 22nd Sharjah International Narrator Forum (SINF) which runs under the theme "Tales of the Seas”. The event highlighted the key achievements of women who have not just swum and dived, but also splashed and splurged their way into making headlines.
“The UAE has always been committed to women empowerment, which is well reflected in the many initiatives that the government and society offers. Gone are the days when women were expected to only explore the traditional roles. In today’s time, women are shooting for the stars and serving as gamechangers in a plethora of sectors, with diving being the most prominent one. The government is publicly showing support to women. In the diving area, the government is always providing women with training centers and are constantly rewarding praise them to motivate and encourage others to do the same and not underestimate their capabilities, ” said Sara, a member of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage (SIH).
The UAE has been steadfast with women occupying dominant positions in diving. Some of the key representatives are local Emirati women divers, including Hadia Al-Minhali, Nada Al-Bedwawi and Sahar Al-Rasti.
“An evolution is taking place in the diving industry, leading to new and exciting pathways for females in this discipline. Thanks to many empowering movements, significant changes are happening, and this comes during a time where diversity is needed to craft and shape the future of our sport,” added Sara.
While the forum discussed how women divers are raising the bar of diving with their new techniques and styles, it also brought to light how diving is serving as a platform for many to confront their fears. According to experts present at the forum diving not only helps overcome anxieties, but has helped several women recognize their strength, power, determination, and perseverance.
This year’s SINF focused on water and its rich and valuable history in the Arab world. While it discussed wonderful tales of the seas and the oceans from across the world, it also shed light on areas that make water bodies an amazing experience!
